Halitosis or bad breath happens when there’s too much bacterial activity in our mouth. It can be caused by poor dental hygiene which is favorable for bacteria in the gums and tongue to flourish. What’s worse about this is that most of the time, we don’t know that we suffer from halitosis until someone faints or someone who doesn’t care about our pride tells us. But, it doesn’t have to go that way if we take early precautions to halt the bacterial activity in our mouth once and for all. So, stay tuned and try out these ideas!

1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling typically involves gargling with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. However, other oils such as sunflower oil and sesame oil too is applicable. It is recommended to not swallow the oil because that’s not something you would want to do after pulling out all the bacteria from your mouth into the oil. Coconut oil may not exactly be cheap but it does have other additional benefits when used for oil pulling:

  • boost immune system
  • improve skin condition

2. Honey Lemon

Yum yum! This is one delicious way to cure bad breath. Mix a glass of water with juice from a lemon and 1 teaspoon of honey. Dissolve the honey completely before drinking it. Repeat twice a day for a fortnight. You can adjust the honey amount according to your liking.

3. Baking Soda

You may know this fella from the kitchen but did you know that you can also use it to brush your teeth. That’s right! Instead of using toothpaste, use baking soda instead. Dampen your toothbrush with water before dipping it into the baking soda and brush as usual. Baking soda can neutralize the acidic build up in your tongue and teeth. You’ll experience less bad breath problems after brushing with it for the long term.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is produces by the fermentation of apples. There’s basically two way on how you can use this incredible potion to help you clear the problems of bad breath. First, you make a drink out of it. Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water. Drink it before each meal. It will help improve digestion and get rid of bad breath.

The other way is making a mouthwash out of it. They don’t exactly taste weird so if you dislike to swallow it, making a mouthwash with it is probably the best option. Mix half a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water. Stir well before gargling it for 30 seconds.

5. Tea Mouth Wash

The active ingredient, polyphenols in tea can help to eliminate bacteria. It keeps plaque from forming and destroys acids that can cause tooth decay. So, gargling with it may not be a bad idea. Try to get black tea for this purpose because it has more potent content of polyphenols.

6. Yogurt

Yogurt isn’t just a healthy food for weight loss and blood pressure, it’s also an incredible food stuff that helps with bad breaths! 6 ounces of yogurt a day can help reduce smelly compound, hydrogen sulfide in our mouth.

7. Salt Water

Salt water increases the alkalinity of the mouth. It also draws water out from the bacterial cells and kills them. Hence, it reduces bacterial activity in the mouth. Less bacteria means less smelly compound produced. For this, create a mixture of 9 table spoon of salt with 2/3 cup of water. Then, gargle it. Repeat as necessary especially when you’re not exactly in a condition to brush your teeth.

Remember, prevention is better than cure especially when you can’t exactly detect if you have halitosis. The best way is to practice a good dental hygiene. Gargle with water to remove food scraps after eating. Always brush your teeth 30 minutes after eating and not before that. Floss your teeth as well to remove food scraps that are trapped between your teeth. Regular brushing may not be able to remove these hidden scraps effectively. Thanks for reading.
